From the Studio

From the Studio

A quieter space to share what’s happening behind the bench, from works in progress and seasonal collections to studio life on the Isle of Wight.

Here, I share the process behind the pieces, moments from the studio and the stories that shape each design.

  • The Bay Collection

Shaped by the coastline of the Isle of Wight, The Bay Collection draws on shifting tides, worn textures and the quiet rhythm of the sea.

Each piece is handcrafted in silver or gold, with surfaces that echo erosion, movement, and time…jewellery designed to hold a sense of place.

    The Inspiration

    The collection began with observation.

    Light moving across the water.
The texture of stone softened over time.
The way the shoreline is constantly reshaped, never fixed.

These details aren’t recreated directly, but translated – through mark-making, form and the subtle irregularities that come from working by hand.

    The Making Process

Each piece is individually handcrafted in the studio, allowing the material to respond during making.

Rather than highly polished finishes, the surfaces are left with a softer, more organic quality – reflecting the natural changes that inspired them.

There’s a balance between control and unpredictability, where the process itself becomes part of the final piece.

    A Sense of Place

The Bay Collection isn’t about a single location, but a feeling.

For some, it’s a connection to the Isle of Wight.
For others, it’s a memory of time spent by the sea – something personal, carried quietly.

Each piece is made to be worn, held, and returned to a small, physical connection to place and experience.

The Bay Collection: Jewellery Shaped by the Isle of Wight

The Bay Collection began with the coastline.

Not as a fixed idea, but as something observed over time and shifting light across the water, the texture of worn stone, the way the tide reshapes the shoreline again and again.

Living and working on the Isle of Wight, these details become part of the process almost without noticing. They find their way into the work through texture, form, and the marks left behind during making.

Each piece in The Bay Collection is handcrafted in silver or gold, with surfaces that echo erosion, movement and time.

Rather than highly polished finishes, the pieces hold a softer, more organic quality,  shaped to reflect the quiet irregularities found along the shore.

There’s a balance between control and letting the material respond, allowing the making process to mirror the natural changes that inspired it.

The collection isn’t about recreating the coastline directly.

It’s about holding onto something of it’s a sense of place, a memory, or a feeling that’s difficult to put into words but instantly recognisable.

For some, that might be a connection to the island. For others, it’s something more personal, a reminder of time spent by the sea, or a moment they want to carry with them.

This is where the work begins.

Not as a finished piece, but as a starting point and something that continues to evolve, just like the landscape it comes from.

Living Heritage in Practice

Recently contributed to a national submission led by Bench Peg, recognising jewellery making and silversmithing as part of the UK’s living heritage, alongside wider craft disciplines, supporting a UNESCO-aligned inventory of skills and practices.
The focus isn’t just on the objects themselves, but on the knowledge, techniques and processes behind them, the skills that are learned, practised and passed on over time.
A quiet reminder that these traditions continue at the bench every day.
Slower, steadier work… but work that holds meaning.

Where ‘Softened by Time’ began…

This piece started long before the bench.
In the quiet noticing of how the landscape shifts, how surfaces soften, edges blur and textures are shaped by time.

From those observations, ideas begin to form.
Sketches, paper, fragments…slowly translating into something tangible.
And eventually, something you can wear
Each piece begins this way.
Rooted in place.
Shaped by time.

‘Softened by Time’ will be exhibited as part of the Isle of Wight Open Studios Showcase at Quay Arts from 18th April – 30th May 2026
